The high school years can be a rough ride for some. In the spirit of giving teens support, both financially and emotionally, local Kiwanis Clubs met up on April 2 for the annual Turnaround Scholarship fundraiser dinner.
Hundreds of members from clubs in the San Jose area, including Willow Glen, Cambrian, Almaden Valley and other cities like Campbell and Los Gatos, convened to share the importance of second chances and to raise scholarship money for high school seniors who have persevered.
Michael Rubino, of the Willow Glen club, estimates that more than $60,000 was raised. The funds will be matched by the Leo M. Shortino Family Foundation.
Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen takes part in annual pumpkin patch tradition - 10/30/2012
The Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen created pumpkin patches for kindergartners at both Willow Glen and River Glen Elementary schools before Halloween.
It's a tradition now in its 11th year and one the Kiwanis members clearly enjoy.
"Each classroom comes out one at a time and when they see the pumpkins laid out for them, their smiles are so heartwarming," says Michael Rubino, a past president of the group.
"I think it may be one of the first times in their lives that they are doing something by themselves, without mom or dad.
"They search to find the special one, like it is the most important thing in their lives."
Willow Glen Kiwanis keeps flags at San Jose's Veterans Memorial pristine - 9/13/2012
The 76 flags at the Veterans Memorial in downtown San Jose are once again pristine white, thanks in part to the Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen.
For six years, the Kiwanis have devoted a morning once or twice a year to taking down the soiled flags and raising new white ones at the memorial, adjacent to the Center for Performing Arts.
Prior to the Kiwanis stepping forward, the task was done by city employees, taking most of a day.
With 11 Kiwanis on hand Aug. 25, the flags were replaced in less than two hours.

Twenty at-risk high school seniors were recognized for changing the direction of their lives in a positive way at the 17th annual Turnaround Scholarship luncheon in early May.
The Kiwanis Clubs of Willow Glen and Almaden Valley were joined in sponsoring the event this year by the Pueblo de San Jose Kiwanis Club.
Each student received a $1,000 scholarship for college and is eligible for further scholarships for four years.
